Like most things, there’s an easy way to do them and there’s a hard way to do them, as well as right and wrong ways to do them. Life would be much easier for those that take care of the details ahead of time, and that includes IT tasks.
Software installation can be very easy, even if the user is not an IT-educated person. However, no matter how much someone knows about a new OS, it can still be a bear to install and then use. There’s almost always something that was overlooked or forgotten, and the technician pays for the mistake in hours lost while backtracking and re-doing the install. It’s not unusual for what should take less than an hour to take several hours instead.
Here are some tips to help that OS or upgraded software installation to work and work easily.
- Have a paper and pencil handy; there is a lot to make note of. If there’s anything that requires the user to remember something, or if something is confusing, write it down along with detailed notes that can be used for research or a future install.
- If it’s a reinstall, write down all important email addresses ahead of time. They won’t come with the new program and could be lost.
- Jot down network settings for each network connection.
- Store all downloaded software to a CD or DVD (not all software is compatible with every OS).
- Make sure to list all the applications wanted and gather the software (and any keys) to reinstall them.
- Download drivers for every kind of hardware so everything needed is there.
